CORRELATION BETWEEN PARENTAL INFLUENCE AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN EPE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE
Abstract
Students’ academic performance is a crucial expectation from parents to justify the financial and non-financial commitments to their children/wards. The study investigated the effect of parental influence on the students’ academic performance of secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design. The population of study comprised 100 students from five (5) secondary schools in Epe Local Government, in Epe division of Lagos State, Nigeria. Questionnaires were administered to students in both private and public secondary schools and we got responses from all the 100 respondents. Data extracted from responses received were collated and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics through the use of SPSS. Chi Square was used to test the hypotheses of the study. The findings revealed that supportive home environment had a significant effect on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria, communication with teachers had significant effect on students’ academic performance and parents’ attendance at school events had significant effect on students’ academic in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study concluded that parental influence has a significant effect on students’ academic performance in Lagos state, Nigeria. The study recommended that the management of schools should encourage parents to create supportive home environment for study, establish a robust platform for parent-teacher communication and create more awareness about school events so as to boost students’ academic performance.
