QUALIFICATION AND TEACHING EXPERIENCE AS DETERMINANTS OF TEST DEVELOPMENT SKILLS OF PHYSICS TEACHERS IN DELTA CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF DELTA STATE

Abstract

This study investigated qualification and teaching experience as determinants of test development skills of physics teachers in Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State. Four research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population and sample of the study consisted of 570 and 57 respectively. Data was collected with a structured interview guide designed by the researcher. A reliability coefficient of 0.89 was obtained for the items on the interview guide. Teachers‟ responses were recorded in line with response format in the interview guide. Quantitative data collected was subjected to data analysis and the research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that qualification and teachers‟ teaching experience determine the test development skills possessed by secondary school physics teachers in Delta Central Senatorial District while sex and location do not determine the test development skills possessed by secondary school physics teachers in Delta Central Senatorial District. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that qualified and experienced physics teachers should provide mini workshop for less qualified colleagues to be able to apply the skills for reliable and valid test development, test items banks in physics should be encouraged by teachers, principals and school management where less experienced teachers in test development skills can draw for the purpose of learning.
